Cost of Living in Canton: How Far Will My Dollar Go?

Senior couple reviewing finances

Canton is a city known to football fans. It's a fun city that takes prides in the classics but still emphasizes creativity. Seniors, especially, might want to consider how much it costs to live in Canton. Compared to other places in the United States, the cost of living in Canton is below the national average. The median home price is about $71,000, while the median average of homes in the US is more than double that! If your senior loved one lives in Canton, you may find yourself wondering what the cost of assisted living, nursing homes and private aid run there. Here are some numbers for you to see how far a dollar goes toward senior care.

Assisted Living Facilities

Assisted living facilities are for alternative housing options for seniors who don't need the extensive nursing and medical care offered by a nursing home but who still need assistance with things like bathing, dressing, toileting, etc. These facilities are cheaper than nursing homes but not always fully covered by insurance. In Canton, the lowest assisted living facilities are $2,080 a month and the highest are $5,100 a month. The average cost across the city, however, is $2,850 per month.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes offer care to seniors who don't need to be hospitalized but can't be cared for at home because of their physical or mental needs. Medicare will cover skilled nursing facilities only if certain provisions are met and only for 100 days. The average nursing home stay is over 800 days. For Medicaid to cover nursing home costs, your loved one must have very limited assets.

The average semi-private nursing home in Canton is $190 a day, which amounts to $69,350 for a year. If your loved one does not want a roommate and opts for a private room, that will run $215 a day or $78,475 a year.

Home Health Aides & Private Caregivers

The alternative to an assisted living facility or nursing home is at-home care, which can include home health aides and private caregivers.

The average hourly cost of a home health aid is $19 an hour in Canton. They can assist with things like bathing, changing dressing, administering medication, and taking vitals.

For adults that don't need the help of a skilled nurse, private companies can assist with caregivers to help your loved one to remain at home with a little help. These caregivers can assist with transportation to doctor's appointments, preparing meals, housekeeping, and making sure your loved one gets adequate exercise. The average cost is between $16 and $18 an hour for this type of service in Canton, which makes it a much cheaper alternative to nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
